Who would you call if someone dropped a 40 ton weight on your roof, the insurance company? Can your roof hold a 40, 50 or 100 ton weight dropped on it? Residential roofs are sloped so that things like snow, rain or small objects slide off to the ground but most commercial roofs have little or no slope. Everyone knows what it is like to shovel a driveway after a snow fall. The typical 2 car driveway is about 20’ by 80’. Using a ten inch snowfall of dry snow on the 800 cubic foot driveway and water weighing 62 lb/cubic foot the total added weight ends up being over 2 tons! In this area we get a more wet or dense snow because we are closer to the coast. Dry snow is usually 3% water where as a more dense snow may be 20% water with ice at 100%. On a typical 50,000 square foot roof that’s a huge added weight load – about 125 tons.
